There’s something magical about being in a room full of people who share your passion. This September, Lauren and I experienced that magic firsthand at the Science Fair Directors Institute (SFDI) conference in Kansas City, where fair directors from across the United States gathered to shape the future of science and engineering fairs. As representatives of ProjectBoard, we weren’t just there to sponsor and present – we were there to listen, learn, and understand how we can better support the incredible community that makes science fairs possible.

The Heart of Science Fairs
Coming Together for a Common Cause
Let me set the scene: A conference room buzzing with energy as science fair directors from across the country share their stories. Veterans with decades of experience sit alongside enthusiastic newcomers. Some manage fairs with thousands of participants, others nurture growing regional events. But all share the same commitment – creating opportunities for young scientists to shine. The SFDI brought these dedicated individuals together, turning individual passion into collective wisdom. What struck us most? Nearly everyone in that room manages their regional fair as a labour of love – organizing these events on top of full-time and part-time careers. Their dedication to supporting young scientists isn’t just a job; it’s a calling.
Key Themes That Emerged
Reimagining Science Fair’s Image
A powerful recurring theme emerged throughout our discussions: the need to transform the public perception of science fairs. Directors shared stories of how they’re working to make projects more relatable and accessible, moving beyond the stereotype of volcanic eruptions to showcase real-world problem-solving that students tackle every day. The mission isn’t just about changing minds – it’s about opening doors for more students to see themselves as scientists.
Expanding the Circle of Science
One message resonated clearly throughout the conference: we need to make science fairs more accessible to all students (or, as we like to put it, “No STEM Mind Left Behind”). Directors shared challenges and innovative solutions for reaching underserved communities, engaging new schools, and breaking down barriers to participation. The conversations weren’t just about numbers—they were about creating genuine opportunities for every student to explore their scientific curiosity.
Protecting Young Innovators
A critical discussion that emerged repeatedly was the importance of protecting student intellectual property. As science fairs evolve in our digital age, directors emphasize the delicate balance between celebrating student work and safeguarding their innovations. This insight profoundly resonates with us at ProjectBoard as we continue developing our platform to showcase student achievements while implementing robust protections for their intellectual property.
Sustainable Support
Perhaps the most spirited discussions centered around sponsorship and fundraising. Veterans shared their success stories, while newcomers brought fresh perspectives. The takeaway? While securing sponsorships requires tremendous effort, it’s this support that transforms passionate volunteer work into sustainable programs with lasting impact. By building lasting partnerships, science fairs can create opportunities that change students’ lives.
A Road for Every Young Scientist
Beyond ISEF: Celebrating Every Journey
During our presentation, we shared a vision that captured the hearts of many: ‘We believe students need a place where their road continues, even if that road doesn’t take them to ISEF.’ Because in science, success isn’t measured by a single destination – it’s found in the curiosity that drives us to ask questions, the persistence that helps us solve problems, and the courage to share our discoveries with others. Every student who engages with STEM is adding their voice to the grand conversation of scientific discovery – and that’s worthy of celebrating!
Building Communities That Last
Science fairs have always been about more than competition. They’re about building communities where curiosity thrives and innovation is celebrated. The directors at SFDI understood this deeply, sharing stories of students whose lives were changed not by winning but by being part of something bigger than themselves.
Looking Forward Together
A Shared Vision for the Future
As we left Kansas City, we carried with us not just ideas and strategies but a renewed sense of purpose. The challenges facing science fair directors are real – from funding constraints to participation barriers – but so is their determination to overcome them. At ProjectBoard, we’re committed to supporting this community, providing a platform that helps them achieve their larger vision of inclusive, engaging science fairs that celebrate and spotlight the innovative youth voices in their community that deserve to be heard.
The Power of Connection
The SFDI conference reminded us that the strongest solutions come from collaboration. When directors share their experiences, when communities support each other, when resources and solutions to common problems are freely exchanged, and when platforms like ProjectBoard bridge the gaps between events, we create something powerful – a network that supports and celebrates young scientists at every step of their journey.
